What is CORU
CORU is Ireland's multi-profession health and social care regulator. Professional qualifications awarded outside the State are assessed through a process of ‘recognition’ which involves a comparison of the qualification with the standard of proficiency required of accredited Irish qualifications. If your qualification is recognized you must then apply for registration which will be a separate process.
Who should apply?
- Dietitians
- Dispensing Opticians
- Podiatrists
- Social Care Workers
- Medical Scientists (Lab Tech.)
- Occupational Therapists
- Social Workers
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Optometrists
- Physiotherapists
- Radiographers
- Radiation Therapists
What are the processes?
1. Recognition
If you are an international professional, you must apply for recognition first. You will need to submit information related to your qualifications, including clinical placements, internships, research project* and employment history. If your application meets the standards of proficiency, your qualifications will be recognized.
Timeline Required: 04 months
2. Registration
Once your qualification is recognized by the CORU registration board based on the information you provided in your application, CORU will issue a recognition decision letter. This letter can be used to complete your registration application. Please note that registration is a separate process and must be completed independently.
Timeline Required: 04 months

Still wondering if this is for you?
The qualifications assessment process relies on the documents you provide. The more information you can give, the faster CORU can reach a decision. CORU needs to be satisfied that you have the knowledge, skill and competence to practice your profession in Ireland, so it is essential that you read the Standards of Proficiency before filling in information on placements and providing additional information on employment and postgraduate learning. If you can provide the evidence to show how you have met the required standard, the Registration Board will have the evidence to reach a decision without delay.
